Pavement Ants

These are one of the most annoying and common indoor pests. They can invade buildings and homes easily, constructing their nests under the foundation. Their diet consists of termites, other insects, or sugary foods/liquids. They can lead to dollars lost, as they can cause serious structural and landscape damage if they get out of control. This is because their preferred nests are under building foundations, sidewalks, and patios. Mounds are easy to spot, but they are just an exit or enter point for the ants. Carpenter Ants

In the Northeast, red and especially black carpenter ants are common. These are the most destructive of any ant species, burrowing in damp wood, compromising any building’s structure. They are large insects, ranging from ½” to 1″ in length. They are active year round, and can be found anywhere. They usually prefer deteriorating wood, but will also go after healthy wood if they want to expand their colony.

Infestations may begin for many reasons, including water leaks, sill areas being next to soil, bringing firewood indoors, and wood being covered with backfill from new construction. Carpenter ants are nocturnal, so you will only see them if they have a lack of resources or are in a reproductive generation.
